Protecting Democracy

Susan Pynchon, Executive Director of FFEC, is featured throughout this documentary, produced by Simon Ardizzone and Russ Michaels, co-producers of the HBO, Emmy-nominated documentary "Hacking Democracy." This follow-up documentary demonstrates the lack of transparency throughout the elections process in Florida and efforts by the Florida Department of State and some local election officials to prevent citizen observation of their elections.

In this 5-minute video clip, Susan Pynchon, Executive Director of FFEC, challenges the lack of transparency during the 2006 Sarasota County recount, an election where the votes of 18,412 voters were never counted in the U.S. Congressional District 13 race—a race in which Republican Vern Buchanan defeated Democrat Christine Jennings by 369 votes. Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent attempts to restrict citizen observation at the recount until Ms. Pynchon objects to the opaque procedures.

Order Hacking Democracy, the Emmy-nominated documentary aired on HBO, about the ease of hacking an election, featuring Bev Harris of Black Box Voting; Susan Pynchon, Executive Director of FFEC; Ion Sancho, Supervisor of Elections in Leon County, FL; the Volusia County, FL elections staff; and citizen activists around the country.

FFEC has provided each Volusia County library with a copy of Hacking Democracy. It is also available through NetFlix.
